The thoracotomy was to try both heart massage to restart the heart and look for major "bleeders" to clamp off or stave blood loss. But the primary focus is to try to restart the heart.

Actually most U.S. thoracotomies are not so pronounced like that; so i recant my thought that it may be a thoracotomy.
