The doctors: it's a thoracotomy. Sadly, it didn't save her life, though.

Last week's trauma case: 50 yo F hit & run victim, pedestrian vs vehicle. Was being resuscitated in the ER and went into cardiac arrest, presumably from massive bleeding and had to have her chest cracked open. And was rushed up to the OR with about 10 min notice to everyone upstairs including us.

Sad to say, she lost too much blood and despite another 13-14 units of PRBCs being thrown in and started on various pressors, she didn't do well and her heart suffered too much ischemic injury during the resuscitation efforts.

Thoracotomy? Technically, yes, but I have never seen one done like that by ANY doctor, no matter how shitty he doctor.
