Cambodian Student Fails Test; Hangs Up Academic Career
My competency in the Khmer script is about as inadequate as it can be. And software isn't particularly reliable. So details here are fairly general. I don't know what sort of test she failed. Something to do with college entrance exams I -think-. She was 18/19 years old and whatever test it was has about a 65% pass rate. Clearly it was important to her, whatever it may have been. Update Edit: Several of her friends were talking on their FB pages about her spending months studying for the entrance exam for a medical school program (possibly nursing). Apparently, she just missed the mark on the mathematics portion of the exam and was disallowed entry into the program as a result. After she got the examination results, she gave all of her savings to her cousin (maybe sister) to give to her mother, who paid for the test. Then she went outside and hanged herself from the eaves of the house with a nylon rope. Body was discovered shortly thereafter when the mother sent the sister to find the girl for dinner. They found her kneeling in a partial suspension hanging position below the window. No images of her still suspended, as she was cut down before photographers arrived on the scene. But a good number of cut-down pics of varying levels of quality. Several images in the sequence don't show much because she is covered by blankets. Adding them anyway, as I prefer to provide complete sets when possible. |

If only I could have told her how many millionaires I know who never went to college...

Re: Cambodian Student Fails Test; Hangs Up Academic Career
I know more than a couple myself. In fairness, though, none of the ones I know (and I assume none of yours either) came out of the third world Cambodian jungle. Opportunities differ significantly from location to location. There have certainly been self-made Cambodian millionaires, I reckon. But not many outside of the poppy trade. The medical program she was trying to enter probably represented the one significant chance she had at lifestyle improvement. Besides which, I've spent the last few hours on various social media networks for both her and many of her friends. 75% of the images she's posted in the last year were of her studying. She and her friends both spoke at great length about her dreams of becoming a doctor. The bulk of her closest friends seem to have taken the same test and all of them passed it, so she had surrounded herself with a community of friends who also pursued the same goal and she failed, where most of them succeeded. I still think it's a damned silly reason to hang yourself. But it isn't like she got a D on an English test and overreacted. This exam really was the single most important thing in her life and had been for some time. |

Hard to believe she could fail a test with a forehead that humongous.

I figured someone would comment on that. It was the first thing Etsu mentioned when I sent her the pics. I will say only this...having spent the last several hours browsing Facebook pages and WhatsApp groups based in Cambodia...her features are not particularly abnormal at all. That eye spacing and broad forehead are pretty commonly occurring facial features in whatever ethnic group is dominant there. |
