Re: Cambodian Political Staffer Hangs Up Career *UPDATED 09/02*
Tough blow for the Prosecution today in the case against this provincial governor. Three expert witnesses all testified before the court that they believed the young woman's death was most likely a suicidal hanging and not a murder. The press and the prosecution both seemed surprised by their testimony. Their statements were based largely on a thorough examination of the scene photographs, documentation, her suicide note, her medical and psychological history, the autopsy report, the photos of the cadaver, and the photos from the autopsy. One of the forensic investigators questioned opined that after thoroughly examining the photos (there were over 120 photos documenting her body and clothing alone) and the autopsy footage, her body exhibited all of the signs correlating to a suicidal hanging. It was remarkably difficult to get detail about their findings. I spoke to one detective close to the case (but not one who testified), but the language barrier is fierce and he was a bit reticent to discuss details until the case was concluded, despite having spoken with me on several prior occasions. Apparently, however, her hyoid bone was not fractured...which is very normal for a hanging, but very odd for a strangling. In most manual strangulations, the autopsy findings reveal that the hyoid bone is cracked. Hers was not. That correlates much more closely with a hanging than a strangling with hands. The finger indentations in her neck matched perfectly with her own fingers being caught in the noose as though she was trying to pull it free. Because the issue was brought up on here a lot in this thread, I also asked him (or tried anyway) about the oddness of the urine pattern on her leggings, specifically why it was so high on her ass and barely visible at all from the front. He basically deflected by explaining to me that it was very common to evacuate the bladder and bowels in hanging suicides. He acknowledged that she had done so, but then dropped it. I tried to point out that those things are not uncommon in strangulations as well and that the urine pattern is more oriented towards her lying prostrate, but he didn't clarify further. Maybe I can get more details out of him later. The Cambodian cops and journalists are both usually excited to talk to US 'journalists', but this guy was a lot more reserved than the last time I talked to him-likely due to the heat on the case. Anyway, next hearing date is in early May. He's back in lockup for now because the Court still thinks he may be guilty, but the expert testimony was not helpful to that cause. |

Re: Cambodian Political Staffer Hangs Up Career *UPDATED 09/02*
Several of the photos I posted in the OP came directly from the guy I spoke with. He took the actual photographs at the scene. I've been trying off and on for a year now to get more pics from him, as he'd already told me he had over 100 in his roll. But I think the case is too big for him to leak them to me, even with a cash offer. That said, I doubt he had the autopsy photos anyway. He just had dozens and dozens of pics from the scene itself, many of which were redundant and many of which were very thorough and, in his opinion, too compromising because they involved nudity and her soiled undergarments, etc. But even so, I doubt we'll ever see them now. I'll take another run at him when the case winds down, but I won't hold my breath. |

Re: Cambodian Political Staffer Hangs Up Career *UPDATED 09/02*
my bet will still be on murder. no matter what those judges say. judges are afraid to lose their pension, their reputation and their job like everyone else. also his life... and the governor and his wife's family can do all that with a single check and phone call.
