Cambodian Political Staffer Hangs Up Career *UPDATED 09/02*
36 year old staff member of the National Assembly and representative of the Cambodian People's Party youth division committed suicide by hanging in her home this weekend. Police have confirmed that her death was a suicide based on the scene and forensics details (including the position of her fingers in the noose, the angle and depth of the ligature mark, the presence of voided body wastes in her pants, petechiae, etc) and on the presence of 2 hand-written suicide notes. The motivation was said to be related to a romantic entanglement, specifically her husband leaving her for another woman. UPDATE EDIT 3/31: Major Updates in this case today. Making headlines all over Cambodia. Apparently it was murder after all. Huge scandal now. I will update for those interested as news breaks (and it is so so so hard to translate Khmer, so it takes me some time). But the short of it is that she was shtupping the goddam former provincial governor, who was married. His wife (whose father was a major political supporter of his) found out and ordered him to break it off. When he did, the girl threatened to expose the affair. So he allegedly had her assassinated and his brother, the fucking POLICE COMMISSIONER put together an entire team to cover it all up, forge suicide notes, and make the murder scene look like a suicide. FINAL UPDATE: This case was finally concluded this morning. The former governor was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 13 years (out of a 15yr max). His brother, the police commissioner, was sentenced to 10 years. The trial went on for many months and a lot of experts hashed out a large amount of evidence, much of which had been poorly doctored by the defendants. Many of the theories that were discussed by members here were presented in evidence and had a significant bearing on the case: 1. After extensive testing, it was determined that the window structure could not bear her body weight with any movement involved. If she'd hanged herself, the rod would certainly have broken and the only reason it did not was because she was placed up there carefully after already being killed. 2. Her hyoid bone was found to be broken, which is common in strangulations but rare in hangings. 3. The finger imprints on her neck did not match her own and likely belonged to the hands of whichever brother strangled her. 4. Two members of the resort staff testified under oath that she was hanging already when they entered the room and called the police. But they also testified that the bedsheets were in total disarray and heavily soaked with urine. There was no urine on the floor underneath where the body was hanging, but her pants and underwear were saturated with it. One of the pillowcases was also soiled with saliva and mucus. It was therefore determined that she was murdered lying on the bed, with a pillow pressed over her face and a manual strangulation of the throat as well, and then staged as a suicide by the killers. |

Wow, those are some very strong curtain rods to hold her weight. It seems to me that since her arms were found reaching to her neck that she may have had second thoughts as she found herself dying. I'm looking for the evidence of a small chair or stool that she initially stood on to setup for her hanging.

Re: Cambodian Political Staffer Hangs Up Career *UPDATED 09/02*
There isn't one. Forensics guy said that there were bare footprints on the wall behind her. Supposition is that she held onto the window grate to hoist herself up long enough to get the curtain drawstring around her neck, then dropped her weight and strangled about 20 inches above the floor. And yes, because she allegedly used one hand to hold onto the window, it is clear that she lifted her hands and clutched at the noose after dropping her weight, not before. The fingers of both hands were caught against the inside of the noose/drawstring, but she had to have put them there after starting the process, not before. One typically blacks out fairly quickly if a thicker noose/ligature is used (a scarf, a towel, a rope, etc), but it may have taken longer with this thin little drawstring because of how the pressure is applied to the carotids. Hard to say for sure how long she went before blacking out, though almost certainly not longer than 30 seconds at the outside...but she was definitely grabbing at that noose when she died. |
