Re: Cambodia - Young Lady Died After Being Bitten by Rabid Dog
This is incorrect; according to this study by researchers at Princeton University and the University of Edinburgh and this study by researchers at Kansas State University and the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine. From the first article:"Modern cell culture vaccines used in combination with rabies immunoglobulins are virtually 100% effective in preventing human deaths if administered promptly to rabies-exposed patients following appropriate wound management" In the second study, of 113 patients treated after rabies exposure, all 113 survived. It was true long ago that only half survived, but rates have been going up since the 1950s. Also, it has long been acknowledged that rabies is 100% fatal after a person shows symptoms, but it is controversially claimed that rabies can be survived by following the Milwaukee Protocol. I say controversially because 1 person has been saved using this method, and though she suffered brain damage and had to relearn how to walk and talk, she graduated from college and now has 2 children and lives a normal life. However, of the other ~20 people to have received the treatment, none have survived. Doctors now argue whether the treatment is viable or if the girl who survived was just the product of an incredible freak occurrence, as she is the only recorded person in history to survive a rabies infection. For what it's worth, another study suggests the Milwaukee Protocol may be survivable by 8% of patients. |

Re: Cambodia - Young Lady Died After Being Bitten by Rabid Dog
That is why, when i see a stray dog, first thing i observe is its movements, eyes and saliva. unsure movement directions, unfocused eyes and over salivating i am told are very visible signs of a rabies infected dog. is it correct guys?

That is the difference of the vaccine's effectiveness... But sadly, third world countries, where anti rabies vaccine shots are equivalent to 2 or 3 months wages of average person, they opt to first hope the dog is not rabid and just wait, then, when they do observed(decided) that it is in fact rabid, it is usually too late for the vaccine effects. |
