I'm always amused by the lack of patient privacy in Cambodia. It's one thing to have the press snap photos of your dead body out in a public place, but on your hospital death bed?

It's not just Cambodia, it's a common theme in other SE countries as well. They just have different sensibilities towards death - I won't go and claim it as fact but it seems they are quite morbid towards it, considering the regions tumultuous history.

That's a good point, Cambodians especially have no issue posting death photos on the internet and there's clearly a cultural component to it. Although I notice more gore photos from certain countries than others in SE. For example, Vietnam and Cambodia share history with the tumultuous times of the 1970s, but you don't see much current-day death photos from Vietnam, especially those of westerners.

Even so, I think going into the hospital bed is extreme. I can understand why the press would want to go out of their way to get photos of notable people, but the only reason the press went to B.R.T.'s hospital room is because he was white, or as they say in Cambodia, a barang.

In a lot of cases I've seen from Cambodia where people die like B.R.T. at a hospital or a clinical setting from old age or disease, they die alone, with no family or friends around. In particular, I remember this case. Makes me wonder what bridges you had to burn to end up alone like that in a third world country.

But otherwise I think it's more 50/50, a lot of times there are friends and family but they might be omitted from news reports. A lot of the solo-traveler deaths seem to be from overdoses and suicides. What I appreciate about Cambodia is you rarely find cases involving violent murder of westerners (I'm looking at you Thailand.)
