Re: British Backpacker and Canadian Friend Take Bad Pills in Cambodia
Definitely a shame. I, myself, would have suffered through whatever ailed me before I took anything I bought there, but then again, I'd never go to Cambodia, or anywhere else known for a lot of tourist deaths. |

Re: British Backpacker and Canadian Friend Take Bad Pills in Cambodia
I had a university friend disappear there the summer after we graduated in 2006. The last time he sent any sort of communication was when he posted some pictures from the Killing Fields on Facebook, including the stupa filled with skulls and a tree the Khmer Rouge used to murder babies. The rest of the story is very strange, as his (skeletonized) remains were ostensibly found 7 years later by a crew laying down a new road about 10 km outside Phnomh Penh. What strained credulity, in hindsight, is that the Cambodian authorities managed to establish his identity - remember, he was just a random tourist who had disappeared 7 years earlier - within 24 hours of his bones being found. They then contacted the American embassy who got ahold of his parents, etc. His mom and sister flew to Cambodia perhaps a couple of weeks later to collect his remains. His dad elected to stay at home because of his emotional state. When they got there, though, his remains had vanished, or so they thought. It turns out the entire story was (allegedly) a complete fabrication by some unknown party. The American FSO who handled the process was shocked. They had sent her all sorts of official paperwork on the appropriate letterhead. In the end, there was no record of his remains being found; the police didn't even have any record of his disappearance. If a report was made it had been discarded years earlier. 7 years without closure and all his beleaguered family got was some sort of monstrous joke. The whole thing is still a mystery. His younger sister - now 31 - and her husband have travelled back there twice to try to sort it out, to no avail. So yeah, fuck Cambodia lol. |

Re: British Backpacker and Canadian Friend Take Bad Pills in Cambodia
The worst thing now is that his sister still won't accept the reality of the situation. They were very close. He has been gone for over 11 years and she is still in denial. Her husband told me she has kept all these little things from different moments in life tucked away so she can show him what happened during the years he was absent. I think what happened is probably pretty simple. He was a smart guy but grew up in an affluent household and was naive as fuck. Like, the last person who should travel to SE Asia alone. I'm guessing he was gallivanting around wearing the Rolex Daytona he rarely took off and pulling a big stack of currency out of his pocket every 5 minutes to pay for things and someone decided to take it. |

Re: British Backpacker and Canadian Friend Take Bad Pills in Cambodia
Just like bigsnail34 explains here, I have hear from other people, bad comments about Cambodia. I found the british girl instagram and I found some people comments (between all of the "RIP" comments, of course), about how such a bad idea it is to go backpacking to Cambodia. But the account is private now. I guess her family requested the memorized option. |
