It doesn't look dissimilar from the work of scavenging predators. IIRC they tend to go for the eyes and mouth (and other orifices) first. That's why a few people believe the so-called "UFO mutilation" body found in Brazil in the 90s was possibly the prey of black vultures, as his mutilations were similar.
