Depending on how old you are, the metal train-track “smile fixers” were either in style or completely embarrassing.

Well, there is a trend sweeping the nation of Brazil -- and it comes stocked with those little coloured rubber bands.

That’s right … BRACES ARE THE MUST HAVE FASHION ACCESSORY!

When I first landed in this country I couldn’t believe the number of people wearing the dental device.

They were everywhere. The clerks at the hotel all had them. The police officers were sporting them. Even the 50-year-old taxi drivers were hooked up, too.

I asked our translator Erlon about the braces and he told me most of the sets you see in Brazil aren’t real. They aren’t actually fixing anyone’s teeth. They are just there for show.

Erlon told me it was a recent fashion phenomenon linked to class. For decades, only the rich got braces. Only the upper class had the money to fix their teeth.

So in this capitalist society, supply and demand kicked in. People started offering to install braces for the very reasonable price of 40 Reals. (About $20 Canadian.)

No, they wouldn’t fix your over-bite. But you could choose any colour you wanted. You could get just the upper, just the lower or the full metal experience.

A deal too good to pass up for most young people who just want come across as being rich, successful -- and orally responsible.

I had the bright idea, with “anything for my show” in mind, that I would go and get some braces live on camera to show how it all works here. A few pieces of metal cemented to my teeth, with a wire running through for a few short hours is a small price to pay for entertainment. Plus, I could understand what my brother went through all those years.

The only problem was: Where you get these fake braces installed?

I asked Erlon to take me there because, for 40 Reals, it was a steal of a deal. He brought me to a bridge in the downtown core of Sao Paulo and said: “The guys who install the braces work under here.”

“Where?” I asked.

“Under the bridge, out of sight of police.”

Being the semi-germaphobic that I am -- or maybe I’m just not completely insane -- I decided against the procedure.

Instead, I am happy just telling you all about it. And I don’t need a tetanus shot.
