Bradley Roland Will, a 36 year old American journalist and documentary filmmaker with Indymedia New York City, was shot twice while filming street clashes in Santa Lucia del Camino, on the edge of Oaxaca City, Mexico on October 27, 2006, the bloodiest day of the uprising against Governor Ulises Ruiz. He died the same day; his camera was running when he was hit, and his footage became part of the evidentiary record. Who shot him was never resolved: press freedom groups and human rights investigators pointed to pro-government gunmen seen firing in video from the scene, while federal prosecutors charged a protester, Juan Manuel Martinez Moreno, on a close range theory that forensic reviewers contradicted; he served about 16 months before a federal court cleared him in February 2010. No one has ever been convicted, and a state truth commission later classified the death as an extrajudicial execution.
