I wouldn't say those are chemical burns. It's difficult to tell by the included photos, but it appears the IV may have infiltrated. The leaking of fluids (and medications, for that matter) into the interstitial space (the space outside of tissue cells) will cause localized edema. This can also cause necrosis of the underlying tissue and the noted sloughing of the skin. (A few years ago, I accidentally injected my thumb with a Pralidoxime (2-Pam Chloride) auto injector, at work, and the thumb swelled up to about twice it's normal size and the top layer of skin sloughed off. Good times. On a side note, with all the controversies surrounding lethal injections, in the US, it should be understood that vast majority of botched executions are probably caused by sheer incompetence (e.g. poor IV skills, under-dosing, not allowing initial medication to take fully take effect prior to giving the second medication, etc). |
