Yes it is, the Hindus consider it very sacred. Every year Hindus gather for their holy dip, quite a spectacle! The pics show a partly cremated body which floated to the banks, probably being taken back to the river. The poorer Indians who cannot afford all the wood for a complete cremation for their dead end up with a half burned body, which is then tossed into the Ganges. The man in the pics actually does this for a living. It is considered a holy task! Further downstream, you find people washing themselves, their clothes and drawing water to drink. |
