The Ganges River, the holy of holy waters, and one of the most polluted rivers on the planet.

Yes it is, the Hindus consider it very sacred. Every year Hindus gather for their holy dip, quite a spectacle! The pics show a partly cremated body which floated to the banks, probably being taken back to the river. The poorer Indians who cannot afford all the wood for a complete cremation for their dead end up with a half burned body, which is then tossed into the Ganges. The man in the pics actually does this for a living. It is considered a holy task! Further downstream, you find people washing themselves, their clothes and drawing water to drink.

Yuck to think he would grap a decomposed body with his bare hands.
