As I understand it that is exactly why it exists to help investigators to unravel homicides. There is a book btw that I have seen 'the body farm.'

The Body Farm is located in Knoxville, Tennessee and has been a great asset to forensic science. They will recreate crime scene minutia to pinpoint times of death. Many murders have been solved with this wonderful tool and people are willing their bodies after death to this research.
