I wonder if the "tentative" marks and the "3 separate cutting procedures" were simply them bouncing off of the saws (or the saws bouncing off of them) and then landing back on them again? I'd think that quite a bit of pressure would be required in order to get the job done. Perhaps they didn't anticipate how much, and they simply bounced.
