Located on the northwest side of Mount Fuji in Japan, the dense Aokigahara forest became known for suicides. Authorities no longer release yearly totals in an effort to prevent imitation, while trailhead signs encourage people to get help. Its link to suicide is frequently connected to a 1961 novel in which characters die there, although deaths in the forest occurred before the book. These photographs were circulated as being from the forest, but the individual cases shown have not been identified.
