Aokigahara is the dense forest on the northwest side of Mount Fuji in Japan that became notorious as a site of suicides; authorities stopped publishing annual counts to discourage imitation, and signs at the trailheads urge visitors to seek help. The association is often traced to a 1961 novel whose characters die there, though deaths in the forest predate it. These photographs circulated as scenes from the forest; individual cases in them are not identified.
