Alex Zanardi's 2001 Lausitzring Crash: He Lost Both Legs and Survived
Italian driver Alex Zanardi, CART champion in 1997 and 1998, was involved in a high-speed collision at Germany's Lausitzring on September 15, 2001, after his car spun as it exited the pits. He had both legs amputated above the knee, lost around three quarters of his blood and was put into an induced coma. Zanardi survived, later resumed racing and won Paralympic handcycling gold. The event was a CART Champ Car race, not Formula One. |

Re: Alex Zanardi's 2001 Lausitzring Crash: He Lost Both Legs and Survived
Yep, CART. Alex Zanardi lost all but about 1 litre of blood and both legs above the knee. Returned to racing and winning. There are series of pictures online, close up. Still not as bad as the Gordon Smiley crash.
