Alex Zanardi's 2001 Lausitzring Crash: He Lost Both Legs and Survived
Alex Zanardi, the Italian driver who won the CART championship in 1997 and 1998, crashed at the Lausitzring in Germany on September 15, 2001, when his car spun leaving the pits and was struck at high speed. He lost both legs above the knee and around three quarters of his blood, and was placed in an induced coma. He survived, returned to racing, and went on to win Paralympic gold in handcycling. This was a CART Champ Car race, not Formula One. |

Re: Alex Zanardi's 2001 Lausitzring Crash: He Lost Both Legs and Survived
Yep, CART. Alex Zanardi lost all but about 1 litre of blood and both legs above the knee. Returned to racing and winning. There are series of pictures online, close up. Still not as bad as the Gordon Smiley crash.
