Not as rare as you think...I have seen more people commit suicide over the age of 60 than under. Usually the reasons are the recent loss of a life partner, lonliness, depression, money and financial problems and health problems.

she hated being old. I'd imagine it must suck if you are in pain and your health is bad all the time.

Exactly. Choosing the time and place of your death has to be a luxury few attain. And when you have had enough, when you've lived your fill of this mortal coil, better to step off it nicely than turn into a vegetable in some scabby hospital, forgotten and ignored by family, the only impact you left on the world a piss stain or two on a sagging mattress.
