That nun must have pretty tough (even though depressed) to cut her own throat with a steak knife. :-( There's a John Prine song with a lyric (about oxymoronic or unlikely events): "It's like pulling, when you ought to be shoving. Like a nun, with her head / in the oven." |

Re: 5 Different Cambodian Deaths from 2 Days Ago
It’s not particularly hard. If you’re depressed, and not just feeling blue or down, you’re either in more pain than a blade can cause or numb/empty enough that even pain is welcome to fill that void. Plus, you have the carrot dangling right there: it will all go away if you just keep going. The difficult part is making the decision, mostly because it’s hard to make decisions and committing to them in general while depressed, but also partly because a lot of people try to push you to live and many of them will suffer a little for a while if you end your own suffering. It’s not the manner of her death that is impressive, but rather the length of time she waited to answer its call. |

Damn- the amount of pain the nun must have been in- for a deeply religious person to commit suicide- that's like the ultimate sin.

Re: 5 Different Cambodian Deaths from 2 Days Ago
Can’t recall the name, but some dude ordained in the Catholic Church commented that he would rather die than relapse into depression, and I think that’s the same guy who said, having spilled a kettle of boiling water into his lap, that he’d rather do that on a regular basis, as the pain of that was far easier to bear. Seems about right. And it does respond to painkillers, but tolerance buildup and the legal status of anything like that both make it unviable as a long term treatment. We generally prefer to torture and condescend to innocents, not treat or cure them. It’s called being moral and civilized. |

Re: 5 Different Cambodian Deaths from 2 Days Ago
As far as the nun, it just proves that even people of faith suffer despair. Buddhists are tough though - remember the self-immolations? In re homeless guy, how come no one found him sooner? Even if one didn't see him at first, one would HAVE to smell him. |
