19 YO Girl Killed by Train

We had tracks behind our house, and besides waving at the trains when we were little, we used them as excellent walking routes, with 0 traffic. It's quiet, (except when a train is passing) they have bridges over every obstruction, and it IS very scenic. When it's raining, they have good drainage, so there is never a puddle. There is very little snow on them in the winter time, because the trains just blow it away as they pass. If you are stepping on the ties, it is like walking on a completely flat surface. (If it was the times of the apocalypse, I would travel along the tracks instead of on a road, like the idiots in "Mad Max" do)

Makes total sense. But when you look both ways before crossing a street, don't you feel you should look ahead and behind you here and there, while walking ONNN the tracks?

It's only dumb if you're not paying attention to your surroundings. Assuming this gal's death wasn't a suicide, clearly she wasn't paying attention, and paid the ultimate price for it.

One of my best freinds was killed while crossing a single line unmanned train crossing in Newhaven, U.K. three years ago.
It was a windy day,he was slightly hard of hearing,and he was wearing a bob hat..so he didn't hear the train approaching,but he also didn't look to his left..if he had he would still be alive.
The strange thing was that he had gone there bird watching to spot a rare bird [a black redstart],and was idling time before being taken out for a meal at 6.00pm by a friend as a way of saying thanks for finding a buyer for her car...me.
At the inquest the train driver stated he blew the trains horn three times but Paul didn't hear as he had just crossed the crossing safely and doubled back presumably to get his telescope from his car parked nearby..and didn't make it.
His friend rang around asking his aquintances after he failed to show for the meal,checked his car was not at home and then contacted hospitals and the police.
The police had by then identified his body by taking his car keys from his remains and matching hem to his car left in the small car park.
Moral of the story always look if only for a second or two brfore crossing.
BTW this occured three days before my birthday.

It makes a big difference if tracks are used strictly for freight, or if passenger trains use them too. The Amtrak out of Tampa flies at 70+ mph. Freight is more like 30 mph. It’s like crossing an Interstate highway vs crossing a residential street.
