You're right though: in this scenario it seems like everyone around her failed her. Her parents and the witnesses who said they had seen her with this man before.

On the other hand we shouldn't be so sensitive as to make everything black or white to simplify hard topics/situations. When does someone 'become' an adult? It's not blatantly apparent like a caterpillar to a butterfly, alas all I am saying is question the status quo.

I wouldn't even be too quick to judge an adult on being with someone like this. There's just too many different reasons/situations etc to mention. They could be emotionally/mentally deficient in some way, maybe desperate for love, maybe didn't realise what they were like until it was too late and can't escape. Many adults are with people that abuse them. The top suspect in murders is usually always the spouse/partner. All I'm saying though is an adolescents brain would not be able to judge the character of someone in the same way a fully functioning adult would. When I was fourteen I thought adults knew everything! Now i realise they're all just nobs, and I'm one of them.
