A woman is in custody Friday after authorities said she opened fire in a police department lobby in Connecticut, spurring an exchange of gunfire with an officer.

The woman, who has been identified as 51-year-old SL, entered the lobby of the Bristol Police Department at around 10:35 p.m. on Thursday night and "fired multiple rounds" into the window of the front lobby desk, police said. The desk was unoccupied at the time, and the bullets did not penetrate the bullet-resistant glass, police said.*

Officers responded to the gunfire and attempted to negotiate. However, SL continued to fire the gun, directing the bullets at officers. An officer returned fire, but "the rounds were again stopped by bullet-resistant glass."*

SL set down the firearm, which allowed officers to deploy a Taser and take her into custody, police said. The woman was taken "without serious injury" to an area hospital for evaluation. Police said on Friday that SL was released from the hospital and taken into police custody.*

There were no reports of officers being injured.*

SL has been charged with multiple counts, including criminal attempt/murder with special circumstance, illegal discharge of a firearm, criminal use of a weapon, illegal carry of firearms under the influence of drugs/alcohol, violation of pistol permit requirements, illegal possession of a large-capacity magazine, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and breach of peace.*

SL is currently being held on a $3 million bond. Police said she will be arraigned at New Britain Superior Court later Friday.*

The police department said on Facebook that its lobby would be closed for walk-in complaints on Friday so that repairs and maintenance could be conducted.*

S.L, 51, of Colonial Court in Plainville, a former state agency employee, was taken to the hospital after being shocked with a stun gun by officers.

She was released from the hospital and arraigned Friday in state Superior Court in New Britain on nine charges, including attempted murder with special circumstances, the charge known as attempted capital felony until Connecticut abolished the death penalty. Among the "special circumstances" cited in that law is the murder of an on-duty police officer.

She also faces a number of firearms charges as well as first-degree reckless endangerment and first-degree criminal mischief, court records show.

Her public defender told the judge that his client had never been trouble with the law and had a 32-year-old son with Down syndrome. He said she has worked to help others with Down syndrome and has volunteered at church and a food pantry.

She is a former employee of the state Department of Developmental Services, an agency that helps people with disabilities, a state official confirmed Friday. She retired from the agency in 2020 after working there for 12 years, the official said.

According to a police report, a witness said she was at a nearby Bristol sports bar and told her less than two hours before the shooting, "I am going to go to the Bristol Police Department and tell them to kill me or I will shoot them."

The witness said she urged her to get mental health treatment, the report stated. The witness said she also suggested that she go home and sleep, then see how things were the next day, the report stated. She said she agreed that she should go home, but drove away in the direction of the police station.

When she arrived at the police station around 11:35 p.m., she parked on top of a raised divider next to the sidewalk, then got out, stumbled and ultimately fell, according to a report by Bristol Police Sgt. Brian Jones, who said he watched these events on closed circuit television.

An officer fired twice at her from a hallway, only to have those shots also deflected by bulletproof glass on a door before officers used the stun gun to subdue her, Jones reported.

"While attempting to handcuff her, she kept repeating 'kill me,'" Jones wrote.

Concerned there might be other victims, police checked on members of her family and a former landlord she was reported to have "disdain" for, but found them all to be safe, according to a report by Sgt. Jace Deluca.

A former Connecticut state employee had an argument with her boyfriend and stole the retired New York Police Department officer's gun before going to a bar where she told a patron about her plans.

She “turns into a totally different person when she consumes alcohol,” her boyfriend told a Plainville police officer who showed up at the couple's apartment after the shooting.

As they tried to handcuff the crying woman, she told them to kill her, police said.
