A woman identified as Tonisha Green, 26 years old, was shot after advancing with a knife towards police officers in Amherst, near Buffalo, New York.

Officers responded to the apartment complex on Durham Drive following a prior report of threats and found the armed woman in front of her residence.

According to the report, Green ignored repeated orders to drop the weapon and approached the officers, which led one of them to open fire.

The woman received first aid and was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where she remains in custody.

She was later charged with four counts of intimidating an officer and one count of second-degree intimidation.

The county prosecutor determined that the use of force by the police was legal.
