Tyree Moorehead Shot Dead by Baltimore Police, November 6, 2022
Tyree Moorehead, 46, was fatally shot by a Baltimore police officer near West Lafayette and North Fulton avenues on November 6, 2022. Moorehead was known in West Baltimore for spray-painting "No Shoot Zone" anti-violence signs. The Maryland attorney general's Independent Investigations Division said Officer Zachary Rutherford encountered Moorehead standing over a woman with a butcher knife. Investigators said Moorehead ignored repeated commands to drop the knife and get on the ground, then lunged at the woman and got on top of her. Rutherford fired 14 shots, striking Moorehead 12 times. Moorehead was taken to a hospital, where he died. The woman, who said she did not know him, was not seriously injured. Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan Bates later declined to prosecute Rutherford. His office concluded that the officer reasonably believed Moorehead was armed and posed an imminent threat to the woman's life. |
