CLEVELAND - Police in Canton are searching for the third suspect in a shooting that left three people dead. Monday night three masked men walked into a Marathon gas station on 9th street southwest armed with a gun.

A shootout ensued with the gas station clerk being shot. He was armed with a gun and shot two of the suspects who later died at the hospital.

In the area there have been several armed robberies at stores and gas stations resulting in people being shot or killed.

In August, the Savway on Tuscarawas street in Canton was robbed with two armed men firing shots.

The Classic Drive Thru on Market avenue was robbed at gun point.

In April a store clerk was killed during a robbery at Prime Stations gas station on Granger road.

A store clerk at the Circle K gas station in Elyria was taken by Life Flight to the hospital after being shot during a robbery.

“It’s just another tragedy in the community,” said Abe Ayad, owner of Biggie’s Food Mart in Cleveland.

Ayad's gas station is located on East 55th street and last year his brother was shot and killed during a robbery.

His son was also shot at the gas station, and on separate occasions, Ayad said he was shot several times over the years.

When asked if he carries a gun to work he said, “sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t.”

He would not comment on how many of his employees bring guns to work for protection.

“It’s up to them and it's freedom of choice,” he said. Off camera, one of his clerks said she carries three guns to work. When asked why she said, “because [she] feels security is necessary.”

Some of Ayad’s customers did not object to his position on letting employees come to work with guns where they get their gas.

“If I was a clerk I think it would make me feel more comfortable to have a gun or some sort of protection,” said Jess Slagle, who just moved to Cleveland about a month ago.

She went on to say clerks carrying guns to work, “is a quick solution to what seems like a big problem. I think that is the gut reaction, but in the long run I don’t know if that’s best,”

Mistie Simones is a single mother of six who said the clerks safety must come first. “It would be best for them cause they have no way of defending themselves against someone with a weapon.”

Carmine Digiulio, who is the owner of Mr. D’s Quick Stop, which is across the street from the Marathon gas station shooting in Canton, will not let his employees carry guns to work.

“We frown on our employees doing what they did,” referring to the gas station clerk having a gun across the street.

He said he tells his employees, “when they come in the store give [the robber] the money and get them out of there.”

In the very best circumstances...when seconds count, the police are minutes away.

Too bad there isn't video from inside the store. Unless it's your store and what's in the till is all you've got left, just give up the money. It really sucks that the clerk died. And I was already in a crappy mood today too.

this video is a perfect example of why civilized people are uncomfortable around people wearing hoodies. the reason is never for warmth, it is to obscure the face and to appear menacing.
