Truck Sidesweeping a Squad Car on Interstate 15

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper is fine after his patrol car was side-swiped by a semi-truck on Interstate 15 Sunday morning.

Sunday's crash was the second in a little more than two months for Trooper James Wright.

According to Utah Highway Patrol, Wright was stopped in the right emergency lane in the southbound lane of I-15 near Lehi at about 6:20 a.m. Sunday.

Wright had just cleared a traffic stop and was finishing his notes when a semi truck drifted into Wright's lane and side-swiped the patrol vehicle on the driver side.

The crash was investigated by the Lehi Police Department. Officers noticed signs of impairment on the truck driver, 49-year-old Steven Sturgis Bell from Nevada.

During a sobriety test, Bell allegedly tried to run away but was soon captured and arrested by police officers.

Lehi Police said Bell was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony drug possession and misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest. He was also cited with traffic violations in relation to the crash.

On Dec. 9, 2013, Wright was involved in another crash while pulled over on I-15 in Lindon. A woman driving a Ford F-250 slid across three lanes of traffic and hit Wright's car while he was outside of the vehicle. Wright had to run to get out of the way of the crash.
