Thieves Shooting Employee at the 30 Minute Oil Change in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. June 18 2009 - New Jersey police are trying to get to the bottom of an armed robbery and shooting.

The thieves didn't make off with anything but nearly took the life of an employee at the '30 Minute Oil Change' in Jersey City.

The suspects apparently shot him at close range after waiting 45 minutes for him to arrive at work.

At this point in the investigation, though, police said the employee was likely not targeted.

The suspects fled in a dark red or burgandy four door Ford Focus, said Jersey City Lt. Mike Kelly.

Authorities said they are looking for a light skinned black or hispanic male or female.

The victim's name is being withheld for his own safety.

But police said he is a 43-year-old married father who works long days to support his children back in Honduras.

There is a $5000 reward.

Re: Thieves Shooting Employee at the 30 Minute Oil Change in Jersey City

A 43-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot in the stomach and arm with a shotgun as he arrived for work at a garage on Broadway in Jersey City in what officials said was a robbery attempt.

Jersey City police released an artist rendering of the gunman who shot the Sleepy Hollow resident as he arrived at 30 Minute Oil Change, where he manages the garage.

Police responding at 6:30 a.m. to the garage, located in an industrial area in the shadow of the Pulaski Skyway, found the victim on his back in the middle of the street, reports said.

The victim told officers two men had robbed him, reports said.

Bleeding from his arm and belly, the victim was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center where trauma doctors stabilized him before he was rushed into emergency surgery, officials said.

Garage owner Elio Varona said yesterday afternoon the victim was still in surgery and police last night said he was still in critical condition.

Varona said the security video that he turned over to police investigators shows the victim pulling up to the garage and two men running over to him before he had a chance to get out of his van.

"The two guys rush the van and 30 seconds later they shot him," said Varona.

"He gets out of the van and falls in the middle of the street.

The guys get into a red car and drive away.
I spoke to his wife and she is pretty much in shock."

A 52-year-old Jersey City man who was working on his truck nearby said he heard shots and saw two men get into a red vehicle and drive away, reports said.

Police Lt. Michael Kelly said investigators believe the car was a 4-door Ford Escort or Ford Fusion with New Jersey plates and it fled westbound over the Pulaski Skyway.
