A bungling thief accidentally shot himself in the eye while trying to rob a hotel.

Kenyo Antonio Córdova Ruiz, 19, was allegedly attempting to disconnect a CCTV system when the weapon accidentally went off in his face.

The teenager has lost his right eye as a result of the fumble, according to Peruvian TV station Captura America.

CCTV footage allegedly shows how Ruiz and another man barged their way into the La Victoria hotel in Peru last week intending to rob the till.

It's claimed that while his accomplice stood guard, Ruiz forced a receptionist at gunpoint to the open the register.

In an attempt to destroy evidence of his crime, Ruiz then allegedly tried to disable the hotel's camera security system.

But in his haste, the 9mm pistol he was carrying went off in his face, sending him crashing to the floor.

Ruiz's accomplice rushed to the scene to see what had happened, before fleeing.

Incredibly, the thief attempted to continue the robbery, but was overpowered by a security guard and eventually taken to hospital by police.
