HPD Critical Incident - 2024-02-11 at 3700 Southwest Freeway

HOUSTON (February 26, 2024) — Body camera footage released Monday shows off-duty officers confronting the woman who opened fire at Joel Osteen's megachurch on Feb. 11.

Houston police released footage from two officers who were at Lakewood Church. Video from a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy was also released.

The video shows people, including children, running from gunfire as officers ran toward the gunshots. Gunfire echoed off of the walls and ceiling of the nearly 17,000-seat megachurch.

"Put the weapon down, now," an officer can be heard saying before firing his weapon. Another officer cautioned, "she may have a bomb."

The shooter, identified as 36-year-old Genesse IM, can be heard threatening to "blow up" the church.

The off-duty officers were working security at the church when the shooting began. They killed the 36-year-old woman who was armed with an assault-style rifle. Her 7-year-old son, who she brought with her, is still in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities have not confirmed how he was struck.

In the video, a female officer is heard praying over the child.

"Father God, please bring him close to you," she says. "Please bring him close to you."

Houston Police said investigators are still trying to determine Moreno's motive. The AR-style rifle she used was purchased legally in December, Houston Police Commander Christopher Hassig said.

CHILD UPDATE:

(February 26, 2024) — The shooter's 7-year-old son, Samuel Carranza was shot in the head in an exchange of gunfire during the Lakewood Church shooting. His grandmother said he is finally able to breathe on his own after 13 days in ICU.

It’s unclear who shot the child.

Samuel Carranza has undergone five brain surgeries since that day, but Rabbi Walli Carranza, his grandmother, said in a Facebook post that he is finally able to breath on his own.

“Will he live tomorrow? No one knows,” she said in that post. “But he was able to be extubated on day 13 and is breathing well. At the same time he has developed problems that may require yet another form of neurosurgery… his sixth since 2 bullets ripped through his brain and shattered his skull into shards of bone.”

In a previous update, Walli Carranza said he had lost a portion of his frontal lobe, “a major part of what makes us who we are.” She said that half of his right skull was surgically removed during two surgeries in less than 24 hours.

“He was in cardiac arrest multiple times and no one can determine whether he has significant brain activity because his scalp tissue is too friable to allow the attachment of EEG wires,” she said.

But on Sunday, Walli Carranza said her day was made when she saw him smile.

She also urged people to reach out to legislators to “demand that no one’s Second Amendment Rights overtake an innocent child’s inherent right to life.”

At first I thought this woman was open carrying, but she never draws and beats a hasty retreat once she confirms the shooter is still active. Now I think the holstered item is a radio not a firearm.

I almost posted this yesterday. I just felt for the kid. Why she brought him into that scene is beyond my comprehension. He’s better off without her. Just sucks that he got shot in the head. The Facebook update I saw yesterday said he was off the breathing tube and actually smiled for the first time when his grandmother placed a toy tiger in his arms.
