A means of self-defense I suppose. Pepper-spray, taser, stun guns are not sold on the island. Guns are VERY hard to get legally and expensive to get illegally. The only tools readily available for self-defense are machetes and stabbing instruments such as knives. That's apparently the cop's baton; i guess the taxi driver didn't die, he suffered wounds to his leg and he was later carried to the hospital.
