VANCOUVER A police confrontation in downtown Vancouver that saw officers Taser a sword-wielding man as crowds watched in disbelief ended without injury Monday.

About five officers took the man into custody outside the Burrard SkyTrain station shortly after 2 p.m., following a tense standoff watched from street corners and nearby high-rises.

The incident began at about 1:30 p.m. when Transit Police got calls that a man on the SkyTrain at Metrotown was acting irrationally and taking a sword out of a case repeatedly.

He rode the train to Burrard station where Transit Police officers saw him wave the sword around.

He walked to Burrard and West Georgia Streets where Vancouver Police began negotiating with him. VPD’s Emergency Response Team arrived and cleared the area. Police describe him as becoming “increasingly irrational” and he refused their commands to drop the sword.

VPD Emergency Response Team members fired multiple rounds from an Arwen gun, typically used to shoot rubber or plastic bullets.

“The Arwen rounds were ineffective and the man continued to wave the sword. Officers then deployed the Taser, which was also ineffective,” said a police media release.

The man ran northbound on Burrard Street and was chased by officers who tackled him and seized his sword.

Witnesses told a Province reporter on the scene that an Indo-Canadian man in his 30s appeared uninjured as he was led from a TransLink bus to a waiting ambulance. The sword was described as being three feet long with a three-inch wide blade.

Re: Taken Out by the Police

Now, here is an example of good policework. I'll cite the bad, and the good.
