Sydney Wilson, 33, was shot and killed by Fairfax County Police Officer First Class Peter Liu during a welfare check at the VY Reston Heights apartments in Reston, Virginia, on September 16, 2024. A mental-health professional had requested the check after reporting that Wilson displayed grandiose delusions.

Police said Wilson opened her door and swiped at Liu with a knife, cutting his forehead. She also cut his wrist as he retreated down a hallway. Liu fired five shots, striking Wilson three times. She was pronounced dead, while Liu was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening and placed on restricted duty. Fairfax County police released body-camera footage of the encounter on October 14, 2024. On April 8, 2025, Commonwealth's Attorney Steve Descano declined to charge Liu, finding that the officer reasonably believed deadly force was immediately necessary to protect himself.

RESTIN, Fairfax County (October 14, 2024) — Fairfax County police have released body camera footage from an incident last month in which an officer shot and killed a woman during a welfare check in Reston.

The footage shows the moments leading up to the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Sydney Wilson, who was reported to be in an agitated state.

On September 16, 2024, crisis intervention-trained officer Peter Liu responded to Wilson’s apartment on Sunrise Valley Drive after her doctor raised concerns about her mental health.

According to police, when Liu arrived, Wilson initially opened her door but shut it after a brief interaction, leaving the officer waiting outside for nearly 10 minutes.

When Wilson finally re-emerged, she was brandishing a knife and immediately attacked the officer.

Body camera footage reveals that Officer Liu repeatedly told Wilson to back up as she advanced toward him, slashing at him with the knife. Despite multiple warnings, Wilson continued to move forward, forcing the officer into the hallway.

As Wilson swiped at Liu again, he fired three shots, hitting her. The footage also shows the officer bleeding from a wound on his forehead after being cut by Wilson during the struggle.

Other officers arrived soon after to assist, and Wilson was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Cop was trying his absolute best to not have to shoot her. He definitely should of shot her when she kept advancing towards him in the hallway though.
