Suspected Ejected From Pick-up Truck After Crash During Idaho Police Chase
BOISE, April 10, 2015. A Boise man is facing felony charges after police said he rammed a patrol car and led police on a high-speed chase down Interstate 84 into Elmore County, rolled his pickup and then launched a brief foot pursuit. The incident began when an officer tried to pull over a blue pickup at around 6:54 p.m. just west of Chinden Boulevard and Veterans Memorial Parkway. At first, the driver identified as 32-year-old Jose Manuel Sanchez stopped. But police say he then turned the truck around and drove straight for the officer. As the officer tried to get back into his car, the truck hit the officer's door, slamming it closed and pinning the officer's leg. The injured officer radioed for backup to chase down Sanchez. Officers from the Boise Police Department and other agencies quickly responded and tried to stop the pickup. Sanchez refused to stop reaching speeds in faster than 70 mph from Front Street and Capitol Boulevard onto Vista Avenue, West Rose Hill Street, South Curtis Road and eventually onto eastbound Interstate 84. Idaho State Police gave chase, tailing the suspect until he lost control at milepost 84 in Elmore County. Sanchez was thrown from the vehicle, but got up and started to run. He was quickly caught by state troopers. The driver was taken to a Boise hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening. He was booked into the Ada County Jail Friday morning after being released from the hospital. The officer who was hit was treated at the hospital and released later on. Sanchez has been charged with felony battery on an officer and felony eluding or fleeing police and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Jason Henley, a passing motorist from Clinton County, Ohio, was honored by ISP for helping take into Sanchez into custody. |
