Suspect Running Down the Street Fires Several Shots at New Haven Cop
A suspect who shot an officer in New Haven overnight is in police custody. Dashcam video, released late this afternoon by the State Inspector General’s office, shows the suspect, Jose Claudio, running down the street before firing several shots at Officer Chad Curry’s cruiser. Curry, a nine-year veteran who was shot twice, gets out and returns fire as the suspect runs away. Police said Curry was patrolling the Fair Haven neighborhood when he heard a car crash at Chapel Street and Blatchley Avenue. He radioed it in and responded. That’s when police say Claudio opened fire. Curry was shot in both his ear and his shoulder. He’s now recovering at home. Police tracked Claudio, who had an outstanding domestic violence warrant, to a home in Hartford, where he was taken into custody after an extensive manhunt. “It was a lot of good police work. We were able to find a woman who was out on the street, follow up on this person’s name, finding other people and just a lot of interviews, a lot of face to face, knocking on people’s doors, just good old fashioned detective work,” said New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson. “We so often talk about officers putting their lives at risk and it often sounds cliche, but something like what happens last night occurs and it makes us realize, just how important the officers are to the safety of our community,” said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker. Claudio is charged with assault of a public safety officer, along with several other charges including carrying a pistol without a permit and reckless endangerment. He is being held on a $1 million bond and is due in court on Tuesday. ================================ The mother of a man accused of shooting a city police officer apologized for his alleged actions as her son was arraigned on more charges Tuesday. Jose Claudio, 36, was apprehended in Hartford Friday, hours after shooting Officer Chad Curry while fleeing from a crash involving a stolen vehicle, Police Chief Karl Jacobson said. He was charged with the shooting as well as a previous domestic violence incident. Dozens of officers in plain clothes and family members of Curry and Claudio attended the arraignment Tuesday in New Haven. Claudio was clad in handcuffs, ankle restraints, camouflage pants and a fluffy jacket with the words "No worries" emblazoned on the back. Senior Assistant Public Defender Maggie Castinado said her client suffered from mental health issues and this is the first time he has been charged with a violent crime. Claudio was previously convicted of two felonies in 2014 for conspiracy to sell hallucinogens or narcotics and first-degree failure to appear, according to court records. The prosecutor, Supervisory Assistant State's Attorney David Strollo, said Claudio had been charged with an additional incident where he allegedly held a gun to a woman's head in the presence of two children. Noting at least three occasions that Claudio allegedly used a weapon to threaten people, the prosecutor said he is a "clear and present danger." Superior Court Judge Patrick J. Clifford raised Claudio's total bond to $1.8 million — $1.5 million for the officer shooting and $300,000 for the two other incidents. He also issued a protective order in the domestic violence case. The shooting occurred when Curry responded to a crash on Chapel Street just before 1:30 a.m. Friday. A car reported stolen had struck a telephone pole, Jacobson said. Then, what appeared to be a one-car crash, turned into a "frightening, wild shootout," Clifford said. Outside of the courthouse Tuesday, Curry's family said they were grateful that his injuries weren't worse. |
