Suicide Prevention Netherlands Style
Nijmegen, Netherlands- A special arrest team took a confused man out of a window on the second floor on Wednesday night. A special police team was deployed. That happened at an upstairs apartment on the Couwenbergstraat in Nijmegen. The man hung out the window on the second floor and threatened to jump down. Several police units, including an arrest team, came to the site at the end of the afternoon and the fire brigade also arrived with an aerial work platform. The man was 'talked down' hours later. Why is such a team deployed? Striking in the incident is the deployment of an arrest team. A police spokesman explains that: 'The commitment of our specialists is aimed at preventing injury and ensuring the safety of the man himself, local residents, bystanders and of course that of the officers.' In such a case, the police follow a fixed procedure: "Initially, the conversation is first started to reach a solution. That's done through a negotiator." If talking fails, other means are used. Then such a specialized arrest team can also be called upon: 'Working safely at height requires special skills, training and resources,' the spokesperson said. An eyewitness filmed the whole thing. How is the man? The police spokesman can say little about it, he explains: "Despite the police's specialized commitment to this incident, I can't say much about it. It is a commitment in the context of aid. The man has been handed over to the care framework." The spokesperson cannot say anything about the man's current condition. In addition, the police also do not address the circumstances of the incident: 'I cannot say anything about the background and any history.' |
