Stop Cop City or Defend Atlanta Forest is a decentralized social movement in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, whose goal is to stop construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center by the Atlanta Police Foundation and the City of Atlanta.

Atlanta Police Foundation is trying to build the largest police training facility in the US in Weelaunee Forest, a watershed surrounded by primarily Black residents who overwhelmingly oppose the project.

The plans include military-grade training facilities, a mock city to practice urban warfare, dozens of shooting ranges, and a Black Hawk helicopter landing pad.

The Atlanta Police Department have released surveillance video of ‘Stop Cop City’ rioters attacking police officers with a barrage of fireworks and projectiles as officers retreat to safety.

Multiple fires were set, including several spot fires in the grass set by fireworks launched at police.

Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, also known as Tortuguita, was a Venezuelan environmental activist and non-binary eco-anarchist who was shot and killed by a Georgia State Patrol trooper after a potential friendly fire, indicated from released body cam footage, wounded an officer during a raid of the Stop Cop City encampment on January 18, 2023. Which initiated fire from the police, killing Terán. These events are disputed by the Atlanta police department, they claim Terán fired without warning.

Terán was inside a tent at the Stop Cop City encampment. At around 9:00 a.m. that morning, Georgia State Patrol troopers commenced a raid on the encampment. During the raid, a state patrol trooper was struck by a bullet in the pelvic area of the body and at around 9:04 a.m., state patrol troopers fired on Terán, killing him at the scene.

Experts say Terán is the first environmental activist to be killed by law enforcement in American history. Protests and vigils were held in several cities in the United States and elsewhere in reaction to the fatal shooting of Terán with a riot occurring in Atlanta on January 21, 2023.

Many organizations and some members of congress have condemned the killing and called for an independent investigation of the events.

Six people were arrested when protests over the future site of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center turned violent in Downtown Atlanta, police said.

Atlanta Police Department confirmed that five of the six people were arrested were from out of state. One person that was taken into custody was from Decatur. They are all being charged with domestic terrorism, a felony.

"They had explosives, they burned down a police car, they broke windows at businesses," Mayor Andre Dickens said. "And so our police department, along with our state and federal partners took swift action within two blocks and brought that situation under control. And the violence stopped."
