Stolen pick-up driver hits police car during pursuit

ROCHESTER HILLS A 38-year-old Waterford Township man remained jailed Saturday June 14 on charges stemming from a Thursday morning chase in which an Oakland County deputy was injured.

Anthony Andrew Struzyk was arraigned in 52-3 District Court on two counts of felonious assault with a motor vehicle, which are five-year felonies; one count of receiving and concealing stolen property over $1,000 but less than $20,000, a four-year felony; and third-degree fleeing and eluding, a five-year felony.

Oakland County sheriff's officials said a deputy attempted to stop a pickup, later found to be reported stolen, about 1:46 a.m. Thursday at Tienken at Rochester roads because the deputy thought the driver may have been driving while impaired.

The driver drove into a nearby cemetery where he rammed the deputy's car and then backed up and hit it again, disabling the cruiser, sheriff's officials said. The suspect drove off toward Rochester Road. The truck was found with its motor running a short distance away.

Deputies nabbed the suspect about 2:23 p.m. walking near Romeo and Sycamore. The deputy whose cruiser was rammed was treated and released at Crittenden Hospital.

Struzyk has several outstanding warrants for retail fraud, authorities said. He was on parole for possessing narcotics, first-degree home invasion and malicious destruction of property belonging to a police or fire department.

Sheriff's Department officials said the pickup was reported stolen during a breaking and entering Wednesday at a Waterford Township business.

A preliminary exam is scheduled for June 17.
