Skateboarder Tries to Break in at Police Station but Got Away with Door Handle

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of trying to break into an office of the Troutdale Police Department on Saturday in hopes of retrieving his skateboard. Unsuccessful, he only got away with a door handle.

A video surveillance camera captured the suspect stroll into the vestibule, wearing a jean vest with a skull on the back, shorts, tennis shoes and one pink and one navy blue sock.

He tries an inside double door. Locked. Then he tries an adjacent wooden door. Locked, too.

He hits the door opener. Nothing happens.

Then he braces himself against the double doors, using his foot as leverage, and tugs at one of the double door handles.

It eventually pops off, throwing him to the ground, his hat and glasses tumbling off. Visibly shaken, he puts them on, staggers to his feet with the help of the handle and strolls out, clutching the door handle.

Though the office is only open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., it has 24-hour surveillance, which helped police track down the suspect.

He was identified as Nathaniel Mirelez, 20 of Wood Village. Officers took him into custody at his home on Monday morning.

He told police he only wanted to retrieve his skateboard that had been confiscated during a shoplifting arrest earlier on Saturday.

Mirelez was lodged at Multnomah County Detention Center on suspicion of attempted burglary, criminal mischief, theft and trespassing.
