A shouting match at the Sedgwick County Courthouse took place Thursday July 17 during one man's sentencing hearing.

Michael Gaines, who is H-I-V positive, was convicted of battery for spitting in the face of two deputies while in the Sedgwick County Jail.

During his sentencing, when Judge Rebecca Pilshaw gave Gaines the chance to speak, he shouted obscenities at both her and Assistant District Attorney Kevin O'Connor.

Gaines was escorted from the courtroom and the sentencing continued about an hour later through a televised hearing. Pilshaw eventually sentenced Gaines to 13 years in prison.
