Military Police Sgt. Roger Dias da Cunha, 29, was shot in the head at point-blank range during a foot chase in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, on January 5, 2024. The pursuit began after a stolen Fiat Uno crashed in the Novo Aarão Reis neighborhood. Dias was taken to Hospital João XXIII and underwent surgery, but he was declared brain dead on January 7.

Welbert de Souza Fagundes, 25, was accused of shooting Dias. A second officer shot Fagundes in the leg, and he was hospitalized under guard before being placed in preventive detention. Fagundes was charged with homicide and the attempted homicide of the second officer. An instruction hearing in his case was scheduled for August 20, 2025. Co-defendant Geovanni Faria de Carvalho was convicted separately and sentenced to 13 years and seven months in prison. Dias had served with the Minas Gerais Military Police for 10 years and was married with a young daughter.

Ugg. The cop's gun was out but it was practically impossible for the cop to identify the gun being pulling from the blind pocket until it was too late. It would have been safer for the cop to give the man some offset and concentrate on keeping him in his gun sights while he assessed the threat. As it was, the cop was attempting a one-handed tackle - also ill advised.

I also couldn't help but notice the cop didn't start shooting until he had two hands on the gun. It was like he never or rarely trained for one handed combat.

Question is who fired that first shot we heard before either of them showed up on screen? I doubt it was the suspect because it was in his pocket and the cop seemed to be caught off guard by the fact that he had a gun. I'm thinking the cop fired first. Though for what reason, I am completely lost on.

This isn't in Europe. It's in one of the countries where you as a police officer have to fuck up REAL bad in order to face any consequences. Likely Brazil. Like. Publicly rape someone bad.

The 29-year-old Military Police sergeant (PMMG), shot in the head during a chase in the Novo Aarão Reis neighborhood, in the northern region of the capital, on Friday night is hospitalized in a very serious condition at Hospital João XXIII, in Belo Horizonte. (6).

According to the corporation, soldiers were chasing a stolen Uno when, at the entrance to Novo Aarão Reis, the car crashed and the criminals ran away on foot. On the street above, the sergeant began to chase one of them. The entire action was filmed by security cameras.

At one point, according to the PM, he ordered the criminal to lie down. That's when the criminal turned around, took out the gun from his waistband and shot the police officer in the head, who fell unconscious to the ground.

In response, the other soldier fired shots at the criminal who was shot in the leg, and he was taken to the Risoleta Tolentino Neves hospital, where he is being held.

The sergeant was taken to João XXIII Hospital and underwent surgery. He was shot twice in the head and once in the leg, with the shot also hitting the femoral vein.

The suspect, 25, has several convictions, five for robbery, two for theft, one for drug trafficking and another for receiving. He was on a temporary release at the end of the year and should have returned to the prison system on January 4th.

The 38 caliber revolver he used was seized. The sergeant has a newborn daughter who is just two months old.
