Schizophrenic Man with Pellet Gun Fatally Shot by Cop
On April 10, 2026, the Walnut Creek Police Department released body-worn camera footage of a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on February 26, 2026. Just after midnight, officers responded to reports of a man in dark clothing peering into homes and vehicles with a flashlight near Buena Vista Avenue and Alvarado Avenue. Corporal Nick Michels fired his service rifle just five seconds after exiting his patrol car when Pereyra reportedly pointed a weapon at him. The victim was 46-year-old Joaquin "Tony" Pereyra, a local resident who suffered from schizophrenia and had recently stopped his medication. The object Pereyra was holding was later identified as a pellet gun that closely resembled a real firearm. A knife was also found on his person. Corporal Michels and Officer Mike Lee have returned to active duty following administrative leave. Investigations by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and an internal police review are ongoing. The release of the bodycam footage is part of a transparency effort mandated by California law. |
