On July 6, 2025, around 2:24 p.m., San Jose officers responded to the 5800 block of Ry Way for a family disturbance. The call involved 37-year-old Kardin Khan, who lived in an ADU behind his parents' home. His parents said he had mental health issues, was not taking his medication, had become physically aggressive, and was throwing objects at them. No weapons were reported in the 911 call.

Officers went down the side yard toward the ADU. Khan came out and pointed what looked like a long gun at the officers, then went back toward the rear of the home. Officers backed out to the street, got his phone number from family, and called him from a safe distance. After about 20 minutes of talking, he hung up.

Khan then came out from the side yard and fired at least one round at four officers taking cover behind a marked patrol car. The round hit the patrol car's fender. He went back toward the rear of the property.

Other officers were positioned in a rear yard behind the home. Khan jumped the fence into that yard while armed with a shotgun and a rifle. An exchange of gunfire occurred between Khan and one officer.

Khan ended up on the ground in an elevated planted area. When officers were able to approach, they saw at least one gunshot wound and pronounced him dead at the scene. He was found with four firearms and at least 50 rounds of ammunition, including the rifle, shotgun, a loaded revolver, and a loaded semi-automatic handgun. A later search of his dwelling found another firearm, ammunition, loaded magazines, and firearm parts.
