On December 1, 2023, at about 1:43 p.m., sheriff's dispatch received a man-with-a-gun call at the Arco AM convenience store at 13660 Bear Valley Road in Victorville.

A caller reported that a woman inside the store said a man, later identified as Jorge Cardennas, was armed with a gun and had threatened her. The woman asked the caller to call 911 and hid in the store bathroom. The caller said Cardennas was outside in a silver Nissan Altima parked in front of the store.

At about 1:48 p.m., a San Bernardino County Sheriff's sergeant arrived first and found Cardennas in the car. The sergeant approached and tried to detain him. Cardennas entered the store, drew a handgun from his waistband, and shot at the sergeant.

Cardennas and the sergeant exchanged gunfire. Cardennas' gunfire struck the sergeant's legs and hit a Taser on the sergeant's duty belt. The sergeant fell to the ground outside the store.

Cardennas continued shooting, walked out of the store, and advanced toward the sergeant with the gun still in his hand. The sergeant returned fire and struck Cardennas several times, causing him to fall to the ground.
