On January 18, 2024, two SAPD officers in the same marked patrol vehicle made a traffic stop in the 700 block of Southcross Boulevard for a traffic violation.

One officer contacted the driver and asked him to step out after smelling marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The driver refused and began physically fighting with the officers as they tried to detain him.

During the struggle, one officer saw the suspect with a handgun. Both officers drew their duty weapons, and one officer fired one round, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced deceased. The District Attorney's Office is reviewing the shooting.
