Radio Talk Show Host Beat into a Coma During Robbery

Police made two arrests in the vicious beating of a Spanish-language radio talk show host from Chelsea, Mass., who was beaten into a coma by two men using bats.

Gavin Scott and Jamal Roman were arrested on charges of attempted murder in an attack that was captured on graphic surveillance video, New York City police said.

Pelagio De La Cruz , 52, was returning to his estranged wife’s apartment in the Fordham section of the Bronx on Sept. 14 when the attack occurred.

De La Cruz hosts a radio show each morning on WESX radio in Chelsea called Coneccion Hispanica.

De La Cruz was at the front door of the building when he was jumped by two men. The video shows one man beating De La Cruz with a bat and a second man running up and joining in the attack.

Police said De La Cruz was visiting his children when the attack occurred. He was robbed of his wallet and cell phone and police believe robbery was the motive.

Roman, 26, and Scott, 20, were also charged with robbery. As Scott was led out of the police precinct, he shouted that he was not the man with the bat.

Colleagues at WESX who visited De La Cruz in the hospital said his injuries were “gruesome.”

"He may lose his eye. They may have to do facial reconstruction," said Charlie Rodriguez, WESX station manager.

Police had released a portion of the surveillance video in hopes of identifying the suspects. They did not release the portion of the video showing De La Cruz’s injuries.

As Scott was led out of the police precinct, he shouted that he was not the man with the bat.

I'm guessing that Gavin Scott is the white guy and Jamal Roman is the black guy. In which case, yes, Gavin, you WERE the guy with the bat. Video evidence is a bitch huh?

Seems like huge overkill just for a robbery.
