Quick Draw Prank Ends in Near Fatal Shooting and Cop Getting Fired
The Pasadena Police Department has terminated an officer and referred his case for criminal prosecution following a newly released dashcam video showing a "quick-draw" prank that ended in a near-fatal shooting inside a police station garage on September 7, 2025. The footage was withheld for 9 months during internal investigations before being officially released to the public on June 10, 2026. The dashcam video captures a patrol car pulling into the Pasadena Police Department’s underground parking structure. Two officers are seen leaning against a parked police SUV. As the patrol car approaches, one of the standing officers smiles and draws his duty weapon in a mock "quick-draw" fashion, pointing it directly at the oncoming vehicle's windshield before quickly re-holstering it. Seconds later, the driver of the moving patrol car, identified as Officer Roy Alatorre, draws his own firearm while still behind the wheel. His weapon discharges, firing a bullet straight through his own front windshield. The rounds shatter the glass and strike the standing officer in the left shoulder. The wounded officer grips his arm in pain while a third officer rushes to get a medical kit. Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris strongly condemned the actions of the officers, labeling the event as "unsafe, out-of-policy horseplay involving loaded firearms." Following an expedited internal administrative review, Chief Harris confirmed that Officer Roy Alatorre has been terminated from the force. The department stated it maintains a zero-tolerance policy for reckless behavior that compromises public and officer safety. The other involved officers have also faced disciplinary action for their roles in the mock standoff. The department confirmed that the wounded officer sustained serious shoulder injuries but has since fully recovered and survived the shooting. The incident is being handled as a criminal investigation rather than an accidental discharge. Pasadena detectives have turned over all evidence to the L.A. County District Attorney's Office, which is currently reviewing the file to determine whether to file felony assault or negligence charges against Alatorre. |
