KANSAS CITY, Mo. July 15 2008 It began around 7 a.m. Tuesday. Independence Police responded to a shots fired call at a hotel near 40 Highway and Manchester. Officers say after they arrived two people jumped into a white car and sped away. Kansas City Police joined the pursuit. Independence police say the suspects tossed a gun out of the car during the 10 minute chase before it finally ended at 12th and Belmont, where the suspect’s car crashed into a building. Pieces of that business shot across 12th street. An innocent man in a blue van crossing Belmont slumped over the wheel dazed but alive. Still the driver of the car didn't stop. Micheal Gant witnessed crash. "I heard a boom! It like shook my house. I stepped outside and the guy in the white car sped when he hit the police car it shattered," he said. An officer shot the suspect with a taser and put him and a woman in the car into handcuffs. The chase created frustration for Frank Quiroz. "I'm angry at the Independence Police Department. Why are you going to chase him all the way over here? That's crazy," said Quiroz. He's owned F and S wheels at 12th and Belmont for five years. But Tuesday instead of installing new rims he's rebuilding his front wall exploded during the police chase. "They (police) created all kinds of victims around here then they walked away like nothing happened. What kind of crap is that man?" asked Quiroz. Quiroz concedes he doesn't know police policy. He just questions if the pursuit is necessary. Unlike those who only witnessed it Quiroz is left to clean up. Independence Police say the suspects are responsible for the damage to the building not police. The suspects are being held during the investigation but are expected to face several charges. Officers say they also recovered drugs at the hotel. |
